THE PETER N. G. SCHWARTZ FOUNDATION
Established in 1993 by real estate developer and philanthropist Peter Schwartz.
Since its inception, the Peter N. G. Schwartz Foundation has demonstrated a commitment to improving schools –
a reflection of the founder’s interest in not only communities’ land and structures, but also the institutions where its future leaders and citizens are essentially developed. Through private donations and personal funding, the Foundation has created “Values First,” a non-profit, 501c3 public charity, character-building initiative designed to infuse values into DC public school classrooms.
“To educate a man in mind and not in morals, is to educate a menace to society.” – Teddy Roosevelt
The mission of “Values First” is to promote universal values in DC public schools. By partnering with the school district and individual schools, the Foundation helps to instill these basic values by using a simple, low-cost, easy to replicate and sustainable methodology called “Values Infusion.” Superintendents, principals and teachers are trained in the methodology, and learn to use the “Values Code” to work toward building a values-centered school culture and to instill in children the understanding, belief in and the will to act on these values.
